About Highland Lakes Outdoor Learning Center

Highland Lakes Camp was established in 1954 and has been offering training in Outdoor Education for the past ten years. The Highland Lakes Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) exists to help create a stronger community of learners and teachers and result in a greater sense of accomplishment, motivation, and learning for students. As students have fun learning about and experiencing nature they will also be challenged to develop teamwork, trust, leadership, responsibility, self esteem, positive attitudes, and social skills. The OLC brings aspects of science, history, mathematics, reading & writing, and physical education outdoors. It is our hope that as they participate in our Outdoor Education program, students will gain a sense of trust, respect and cohesion within their classes.

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop each student's awareness, knowledge and respect for the natural environment. Through this learning experience, participants will develop respect, and have the desire to preserve and protect their natural environment. Our aim is to accomplish the following program goals:

  1. Promote a nurturing and fun learning atmosphere that is ecologically sound and promotes respectful attitudes towards the living and non-living components of our natural environment.
  2. Provide a non-traditional, creative learning environment.
  3. Enhance classroom learning through hands-on outdoor activities.
  4. Encourage the use of creative experiential teaching techniques and cooperative learning groups.

Our outdoor education program is specifically designed to meet the needs of your students and faculty.

To help teachers maximize their teaching efforts, we correlate all of our outdoor education classes to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) requirements. We work closely with teachers and administrators to make sure their students are gaining hands-on knowledge in the areas the state of Texas requires.

Our qualified staff facilitators possess years of experience interacting with students and love helping students learn about our natural environment.

We are committed to providing an exciting and challenging experience while maintaining the highest levels of safety and protection of your students.

Our belief is that an outdoor education program should challenge a student intellectually, socially and physically.

Our desire is to accomplish these goals by providing high impact experiential nature studies and a variety of fun recreational activities.
